One Cold Winter’s Night: Live (2DVD) Feature

  • KAMELOT: ONE COLD WINTER’S NIGHT (DVD MOVIE)

One Cold Winter’s Night: Live (2DVD) Overview

One Cold Winter’s Night was recorded on February 11th, 2006 at the historic Rockefeller Musichall in Oslo, Norway. Kamelot enlisted renowned film and video director Patric Ullaeus to chronicle the night’s events. Arriving with him from Gothenberg, Sweden, Patric had a large crew of professionals and equipment including 18 cameras that would be used in and around the concert grounds. The title for the band’s first DVD (based on an earlier Kamelot song title) was chosen long before the actual shoot. Ironically this winter turned out to be one of the longest and coldest in the country’s history, with enormous amounts of snow and numerous chaos-causing blizzards. A very special thanks goes out to fans that had to wait in line before doors opened to the sold out show. We sincerely hope we managed to warm you back up!

Pinkerton [Deluxe Edition]

Posted: 23 Dec 2010 05:03 PM PST

Pinkerton [Deluxe Edition] Review

Pinkerton [Deluxe Edition] Overview

Few albums in rock history have enjoyed as complete a critical and popular turnaround as Weezer’s Pinkerton. Though tagged a disappointment upon its 1996 release, today Pinkerton is considered one of the most influential and important albums of that decade and beyond. In 2004, Rolling Stone even felt compelled to re-review the album, raising it from three stars to the ultimate five. Spin has since honored Pinkerton as among the 100 best albums of 1985-2005 and Guitar World ranks it among the top 100 guitar albums of all-time.

Now the two-CD Pinkerton – Deluxe Edition (DGC/UMe), released November 2, 2010, adds color to the band’s musical journey with the original Weezer-produced album remastered and 25 contemporaneous bonus tracks, including every official B-side and 16 previously unreleased recordings. Among the latter are the newly-discovered gem “Tragic Girl,” unreleased B-side “I Swear It’s True” and numerous live performances, particularly noteworthy given that the band rarely played Pinkerton songs after the album tour. The 1996-1997 concert tracks were taken from the massive Reading Festival in the U.K., radio station sessions in Philadelphia and Salt Lake City, and a lunchtime performance won in a contest by Shorecrest High School near Seattle.

Accompanying the package is a booklet with numerous photos and an essay by band compatriot Karl Koch, who reveals how the glorious “Tragic Girl” was recorded at the last minute but left undocumented, causing many to forget its existence.

[if A hit single can be a bit of a mixed blessing for new bands, especially if said song gets you firmly lumped into the "novelty band" category. Such was the case with Weezer, whose runaway hit "Buddy Holly" touched a global nerve upon its release, then got on everyone's nerves after months of radio saturation. However, it did ensure that they sold millions of copies of their self-titled debut. Which is why it's so strange that their second album, Pinkerton, was ignored. Perhaps the cold shoulder was due to the willfully noncommercial first single, "El Scorcho," which crashed and burned. Whatever the reason, Pinkerton soon disappeared, which is a shame because it's a great album. Whereas Weezer reveled in the band's geek-rock image, Pinkerton saw Rivers Cuomo maturing as a lyricist. From the opening, "Tired of Sex," which rants about the frustrating easiness of groupies, to the new wave pop of "Getchoo" to the epic genius of "The Good Life," there's much more diversity here than the Pixies-influenced bouncy grunge of their debut. With the closing solo, the acoustic lament "Butterfly," Cuomo demonstrates a pop mastery that promises great things from this reformed geek. --Robert Burrow]

Nevermind Review

Nevermind Overview

120 gram vinyl/original artwork.
[endif]
[if If Nevermind's sound is familiar now, it's only because thousands of rock records that followed it were trying very hard to cop its style. It tears out of the speakers like a cannonball, from the punk-turbo-charged riff of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" onward, magnifying and distilling the wounded rage of 15 years of the rock underground into a single impassioned roar. Few albums have occupied the cultural consciousness like this one; of its 12 songs, roughly 10 are now standards. The record's historical weight can make it hard to hear now with fresh ears, but the monumental urgency of Kurt Cobain's screams is still shocking. --Douglas Wolk]

Wine Women & Song

Wine Women & Song Review

Wine Women & Song Overview

Here's a funny experiment: find yourself a radio (the old fashioned kind that's not connected to your computer). Turn it on and spin the dial. Wherever it lands, leave it and just listen for a few minutes. Most likely one of two things will happen: either you'll quickly enter the candy-coated landscape of your childhood, fondly reminiscing about old relationships, better time and your first sexual experience or (more likely) you're going to be madder than hell and ready to smash things to pieces. If the latter is the case then we offer you a sounder solution than trashing your pad. Wine, Women and Song, the latest effort by San Francisco outfit known as Porn (The Men Of) has enough destructive might packed into 50+ minutes to make up for almost any duration of pop radio exposure.

If you're familiar with Porn, then you're aware that they always have guest players on tour and in the recording studio. This time out reunites brainchild Tim Moss (Ritual Device) with longtime pals Billy Anderson (far too many to list) on bass and Dale Crover (Melvins, Nirvana) on drums. Their first recording in almost three years (though technically the true follow-up to their Man's Ruin debut American Style,) Wine, Women and Song picks up right where Moss & Co. left off…drifting aimlessly in the coldest reaches of space where the stars align in such a way that it almost seems predestined that an album could be born of equal parts Black Sabbath, Verve and Ornette Coleman. Angry fits of rhythm section melt seamlessly into avant-Iommi jazz and back to bone-crushing rawk – and that's just the first track.

Now the choice is up to you. You can run scared back to your precious radio la la land (commercials and all) or you can wrap your heads around Wine, Women and Song. The choice is simple.

MAGIC – A Tribute to Ronnie James Dio

Posted: 02 Dec 2010 02:41 PM PST

MAGIC – A Tribute to Ronnie James Dio Review

MAGIC – A Tribute to Ronnie James Dio Overview

Dio’s contributions to heavy metal are profound and indisputable. He participated in no fewer than six of the most critically important hard rock and heavy metal albums of all time, including Rising, Long Live Rock ‘n’ Roll, Heaven and Hell, Mob Rules, Holy Diver, and The Last in Line. Ronnie James Dio lost his battle with stomach cancer on May 16th 2010. It is one of the greatest losses ever suffered by the heavy metal community.
Manowar and Magic Circle Entertainment have decided to honor one of metal’s greatest legends with ‘Magic- A Tribute to Ronnie James Dio,’ a new cd featuring Magic Circle Music artists and friends performing some of Dio’s most inspired work.
‘Magic- A Tribute to Ronny James Dio’ is especially poignant because Dio hails from the same fertile upstate soil as Manowar. ‘Heavy metal has lost a great artist and true gentleman,’ says Manowar bassist Joey DeMaio. ‘I had the privilege of being his friend and, along with other friends and admirers, we wish to honor him.’
Manowar contributes a powerful rendition of Dio’s signature song ‘Heaven and Hell.’ Jack Starr’s Burning Starr and the Magic Circle All Star Band ( with Shmoulik Avigal and Joe Stump) contribute to the classics ‘Catch the Rainbow’ and ‘Long Live Rock ‘n’ Roll’ and his cousin and former Elf guitarist David ‘Rock’ Feinstein delivers a song inspired and written for Dio titled ‘Far Beyond.’ The album is rounded out by several tenacious, up-and-coming bands, such as female-fronted HolyHell, featuring the voice of Maria Breon (called by many ‘The Female Dio’) as well as Metalforce, Awaken, and Crosswind, all of whom embrace Dio’s legacy in their own inspired interpretations of his songs on ‘Magic.’
In tribute to Dio’s legacy, famous fantasy painter and illustrator Ken Kelly, the man behind many of heavy metal’s most classic album covers (including some by Manowar) has reworked his iconic Rainbow ‘Rising’ artwork for ‘Magic.’
‘Magic-A Tribute to Ronny James Dio’ is from the hearts of these musicians.
It is not only their privilege, but also their duty, to honor Ronnie by singing his praises while singing his songs.

Led Zeppelin III Overview

Japanese-only SHM-CD (Super High Material CD) paper sleeve pressing of this absolute classic album from the Rock legends, originally released in 1970. SHM-CDs can be played on any audio player and delivers unbelievably high-quality sound. You won’t believe it’s the same CD! Universal. 2008.

[if After plundering the Yardbirds' legacy and Willie Dixon (among others) for their blues-riff-heavy first two albums, Jimmy Page and company surprised many listeners with the strong acoustic/folk sensibility displayed on III. Page aficionados shouldn't have been caught off guard; the guitarist had toyed with similar sensibilities and modalities during his brief tenure with the Yardbirds (most notably "White Summer" from the Little Games album). Ever the creative thieves, Zep kick off the album by nicking the riff from "Bali Ha'i" no less, with Robert Plant wailing it to punctuate the thundering FM warhorse "Immigrant Song." Even other electric rockers like "Celebration Day" and "Out on the Tiles" have an inventive, offbeat musicality to them that suggest the band was already wary of stereotyping. But it's the decidedly mellower acoustic groove of the album's latter half that's the news here, from the graceful beauty of "That's the Way" and "Tangerine" to the raw, folksy charm of "Bron-Y-Aur Stomp," "Hats Off (to Roy Harper)," and the traditional "Gallows Pole." --Jerry McCulley]
