Despite the group's road weariness after a long tour, their final, three-night stand at Madison Square Garden in 1973 was full of the old power. Performances of "No Quarter," "Whole Lotta Love," "Black Dog," "Dazed and Confused," and "Stairway to Heaven" underscore Zep's charisma. Trouble is, you don't get an unbroken performance here. Viewers have to wade through a mishmash of documentary insight into the lives of Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, John Bonham, and John Paul Jones, as well as fantasy sequences supposedly inspired by the thoughts and fantasies of the band's individual members. It's mostly garish and silly, but there are some nice elements, especially insights into the late Bonham's life. Issues Posted: 26 Jan 2011 08:47 AM PST Issues Review Issues Overview Limited import edition of the smash California alternative rock/ metal outfit’s 1999 & fourth album with a five track bonus CD featuring ‘A.D.I.D.A.S.’ (Radio Mix), ‘Good God’ ( Dub Pistols Mix), ‘Got The Life’ (Josh Abraham Mix), ‘Twist/ Chi’ (Live) and the previously unreleased ‘Jingle Balls’. A combined total of 21 tracks. Slimline jewel case. [endif] [if Issues are one thing Korn singer Jonathan Davis has in spades. On the quintet's fourth album, Davis spews forth about misery, hate, happiness, pain, paranoia, and other primal issues, all set to an appropriately dark soundtrack. From "Dead" (which begins with Davis's trademark bagpipes in a sort of choral musical setting), to the first single, "Falling Away from Me," the vocalist's quavery, edgy, manic delivery sets the tone for this 16-song outing. Not as modern sounding or melodic as 1998's Follow the Leader, Issues is a throwback to earlier, more metallic Korn. If possible, Issues has an even creepier vibe than its three predecessors, thanks partially to eerie guitar lines and vocal effects, especially potent on "Let's Get This Party Started." Twisted, cohesive, and epic, Issues comes through for Korn's fans, who relate to the band's cathartic musical exorcisms and aggro, bottom-heavy rage, commercialism be damned. Every Six Seconds Posted: 20 Jan 2011 01:57 AM PST Every Six Seconds Review Every Six Seconds Overview Saliva’s heavy rock–with a dash of rap–is at once current and timeless, unlike many of the bands spawned by Korn and Limp Bizkit. This Memphis-bred bunch’s powerful, diverse debut features a dozen lyrically and musically focused tracks from a band clearly possessed of strong chops and smart heads. Rangy singer Josey Scott’s passionate delivery works well when matched with the chunky riffing of “Musta Been Wrong,” the soaring, layered song’s intensity balanced by shredding guitar. Every Six Seconds has many such moments, with producer Bob Marlette’s taut, techno-inflected touch lending “Lackluster” and “Faultline” a NIN vibe. “Hollywood” is a classic midtempo take on Tinseltown, while the CD’s first single, “Your Disease,” is simply a hit. “My Goodbyes,” the ideal album closer, has a mystical musical quality befitting departed loved ones. Disc 1 finds the metallic progressive-rock quintet at its awe-inspiring best, plowing through its catalog of dramatic epics and jack-hammer instrumentals, including five of the seven songs from 2003's Train of Thought. Disc 2 features an extended drum solo from percussionist extraordinaire Mike Portnoy; gear tours from guitarist John Petrucci and keyboardist Jordan Rudess (fascinating for lay people and downright revelatory for musicians); and a half-hour documentary on DT's 2004 stint in Japan punctuated by tantalizing snippets of band rehearsals. The shooting and editing for the concert are a music lover's dream, with lengthy shots that linger on the performances of individual band members. Disc 2 takes this even further with a multi-angle sequence of the 12-minute "Instrumedley." Production values are extremely high: it's a widescreen presentation shot on high-def video and nicely mixed for multichannel Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound (with a thinner, collapsed version of the same for Dolby 2.0). It must be noted, however, that the center, subwoofer, and surround channels get jumbled right at 1:35:30 on disc 1. The front left/right channels remain in place, but the signals for the other four speakers play non-musical chairs.
