Heartbreak Station [Japan Import]

Posted: 30 Oct 2010 09:03 PM PDT

Heartbreak Station [Japan Import]

AVG. Rating 4.0

Heartbreak Station, Cinderella’s third studio album and ultimately their last record to achieve platinum success, is one of the forgotten gems in the 80’s hard rock era. Long Cold Winter, for all its virtues, was marred by its pop-metal conventions. Heartbreak Station erases such principles. Filled with Rolling Stones / Aerosmith sensibilities and a fearlessness to deviated from the generic formula of hair metal, this genuinely great album showed that Cinderella had more genuine grit than their poodle-haired contemporaries.

Each track is strong, distinctive and never repeating themselves, a fatal error that plagued many hair metal albums. “Electric Love”, “Love Gone Bad” and the sweet, boogie-rock of “Sick for the Cure” are swaggering rock n’ roll that recalls the best of Aerosmith, when that band did not need power ballads or a Michael Bay movie to climb to the charts. “One For Rock N’ Roll” is a simple, country-fused ditty about lacking worries and just playing rock n’ roll. And “Shelter Me” is a riotous commentary on censorship (the accompanying video featuring Little Richard was comedy gold).

But the album’s coup de graces remain the two songs that have the making of an instant classic: the title track, with its melodic acoustic guitars, honky piano flourishes and an beguiling 12-string guitar solo, and the opulent “Winds of Change” both have an emotional splendor boosted by Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones’ majestic strings. The title track, in particular, is the true highlight, ranking with Bon Jovi’s “I’ll Be There for You”, Guns N’ Roses’ “Sweet Child O’ Mine” and Skid Row’s “I Remember You” as one of the era’s greatest power ballads.

It may have not been their most commercially successful album but Heartbreak Station showcased a more ambitious, talented band whom many have taken for granted. Unfortunately, that’s what happened when grunge came by and swept everyone associated with hair metal. It was a dark day for 80’s hard rock and for Cinderella, as their careers went into a startling decline while bands like Helmet, L7 and Pearl Jam achieved gold status.

You know, what’s funny? Back in the 1990’s, everyone would have crucified a band for playing music like this but today, everyone wishes we could have an album like this again. It is the testament to Cinderella and especially Tom Kiefer that they created an album that was unfairly neglected and reaped for rediscovery. Even if you’re not an 80’s hard rock fan, you should pick this album up and give it a try. It is not only a great 80’s rock record; it’s a great rock album in general.

ONE FOR ROCK AND ROLL – MRT –
Cinderella have certainly experimented since their first album, ‘Night Songs’. From the pure hard rock, to blues in ‘Long Cold Winter’ and then a country feel is given to their third album, ‘Heartbreak Station’. Every style they play, they reach perfection in my opinion! This album certainly lacks no talent. Tom Keifer’s unique gravelly vocals remain. And as well as some great rock tracks such as ‘The more things change’ and ‘Sick for the cure’, there are some beautiful tear jerkers, i.e the title track – ‘Heartbreak Station’. They’ve taken their talents to another level. It’s clear alot of passion has been put into this album and the guys have done themselves proud! It’s a change, but a MUST for any Cinderella/rock fan. 5 star album!

Great album, good production – K. Mcgeough – Phoenix, AZ USA
Although, this album wasn’t as good as their previous two, it’s worth purchasing. On this CD, Cinderella joined up with the producers who created Guns and Roses first album, “Appetite for destruction”. I thought this was a good move, on their part. This album added a new
element, the saxophone on some of the tracks. If you ever listened to
Aerosmiths “Permanent Vacation”, you’ll find some similiarities with
that CD and the saxophone in some of their songs. Overall, a fine album. Four stars.

Bluesy, but still rockin’ – Justin Gaines – Northern Virginia
Cinderella took their sound as far into blues rock territory as they possibly could with their third album – 1990’s Heartbreak Station. This album is pretty far removed from the straightforward hair metal of Night Songs, but it still rocks. It’s just a bluesier, more Southern-sounding kind of rock, complete with twanging guitars, horns, and the occasional gospel-style choir on background vocals.

It may not be the Cinderella everyone was familiar with, but I love what they did on Heartbreak Station. Soulful songs like Electric Love, Dead Man’s Road, and the title track give the album and the band a sense of depth that a lot of Cinderella’s peers were sadly lacking, and it’s hard to resist the boogie-rocking The More Things Change, Shelter Me, and Make Your Own Way. People went nuts for Bon Jovi’s cowboy fixation. Why not extend Cinderella the same kind of credit, especially when the results are this good?

It’s not as good as Night Songs or Long Cold Winter, but Heartbreak Station is still a very strong Cinderella album, and I have a soft spot for it as it was one of the very first albums I bought when I moved from cassettes to CDs. Ah, long box memories.

Another “lost gem”!
Superbe Magna Carta studio album, Chris’ songs are as good as ever and Davey, why on earth did you leave them for Reginald?
Essential to all music lovers, but maybe you should listen to Magna Carta’s “Lord of the Ages” and “Seasons” first.

NIGHT SONGS (12” LP VINYL PICTURE DISC)

NIGHT SONGS (12” LP VINYL PICTURE DISC)

AVG. Rating 4.5

Cinderella is often and unfortunately written off as being a horrible 80s’ hair band. That’s not true, in fact they rocked far more than that, this description is due mostly because they are generally associated with the genre and the band is better than they are said to be. Yes there is glam here but also rock and their blues influences show, perhaps not as much as they did on the Heartbreak Station album and during the early 90s but they are there. After being signed to Mercury at Jon Bon Jovi’s suggestion (KISS’s Gene Simmons had tried previously but couldn’t get them a recording contract) Cinderella’s debut album Night Songs came out in 1986 during the explosion of the hair metal genre and their sound made them a hit their album reaching # 3 in Billboard in 1987.

They certainly have some glam in their music, Nobody’s Fool is just that, Nights Songs as well to a lesser extend and some lyrics are glam but the fact is that this album rocks more than the average glam band’s does. Tell me that Back Home Again doesn’t rock! Sure the album has an overall glam feeling to it but like Motley Crue (this is not a comparison of the two band at all ) they rock harder than most hair bands. This album while it is considered glam certainly doesn’t much happy, in fact it’s pretty dark. They had great songs and I still enjoy them to this day. They were MTV darlings with their catchy song and glam looks and hit ballads but they should still be taken seriously, the music here is quite good!

My favorite songs here are the title track, the hit ballad Nobody’s Fool, Shake Me, Somebody Save Me and Back Home Again. Cinderella is much heavier than their name suggests and is one of the better hair bands of the 80s. They had some great songs and I love Tom Keifer’s AC DC-like but rougher vocals and guitar playing. Unfortunately they didn’t release any new material after 1994 and only had 4 studio albums but they are still touring. If you want to listen to some good hair-metal this may not me THE place to start but they are worth a listen. If you’re looking to expand your rock, glam-metal library try this band. Either buy this one or the 2005 Rocked, Wired and Bluesed: The Greatest Hits compilation, don’t be a fool!

NIGHT SONGS (12” LP VINYL PICTURE DISC) Overview

PICTURE DISC, 1987 SIDE 1-1NIGHT SONGS, 2 SHAKE ME, 3- NOBODY’S FOOL, 4- NOTHIN’ FOR NOTHIN’, 5- ONCE AROUND THE RIDE, SIDE 2- 1 HELL ON WHEELS, 2- SOMEBODY SAVE ME, 3- IN FROM THE OUTSIDE, 4- PUSH, PUSH, 5- BACK HOME AGAIN.

Customer Reviews

An absolute hair metal classic!! – sharky –
This CD should definitely be in any hair metal top 25 of all time. Although a bit short on the time, there is not a bad song on here. This flat out rocks hard from start to finish. Their second release has more depth to it, but it is hard to dispute the greatness of an album when you like ALL the songs on it! That just doesn’t happen very often.

Beast of a Rock’n'Roll Album – Ronodean – Indianapolis, IN USA
Cinderella’s Night Songs is a rock album that will live forever because of the great song writing, vocals, and great guitar work. There is not much else to say that hasnt already been said. I do want to let fans of Cinderella know about Jeff LaBar’s new project called Freakshow. Its a great opportunity to hear new stuff from labar. Its an amazing self titled album on Retrospect Records and Im telling you that dissapointment is not an option with the album. Also front man of Freakshow Marcus Allen Christopher has a simalar sound to Tom Keifer. Trust me if you love Cinderella you’ll love Freakshow. Until a new Cinderella album comes out, what else do you have to do? lol hope you guys check it out.

One of the few “80s metal” bands that I can still listen to. – David Christopher – Ann Arbor, MI
Basically, the title of my review says it all. I listened to a lot of 80s metal back in the day. I can barely make it through one Poison or Ratt song now but for some reason I can listen to this all the way through. Great guitar hooks. Nice blues and metal mix with the two guitars. Actually, this is a great album to run or bike to.

Songs for the Sinners

Songs for the Sinners

AVG. Rating 4.5

Charon’s best album, this is a superb example of Finnish gothic metal (suomi-metal?). The singer’s (JP something or other) deep voice is emotive and appropriately dark, and above all, melodic. None of those nasty death growls here. The closest band, if you’re looking for a comparison, is late Sentenced, with an emphasis on emotion (rather than evil/quirky lyrics). Charon’s singer is much more accomplished as well.

Standout tracks include Colder, Deep Water, Rain and the single Ride on Tears. All these tracks display the rockier side of the band, but that is not to say the slower tempos are bad. A female singer is used extensively throughout the album and it really adds a special something to the songs. Lets hope they keep her around!

The only problem that I find with Charon is their tendency to fall back on the same, slow drum beat and bass line during the verses. These tracks (Rust, House of Silent and Air) are better suited to headphones, in a darkened room. But it all adds to the gothic feel of the album. House of Silent in particular is quite beautiful, consisting in the first half a duet and then closing with a great, melodic guitar solo.

Songs For the Sinners displays much better production than previous efforts (including The excellent Dying Daylights). I wish they’d tighten up the drum sound – I think it would lift the whole band to a much ‘bigger’ level.

This album would be a great place to start to hear Charon at their best, and is a must for fans of late Sentenced, To Die For or even Entwine.

Songs for the Sinners Overview

Finland’s premier melodic rock/metal combo Charon makes a triumphant return with Songs For The Sinners out soon on Spinefarm Records. Years of fine-tuning their style has now resulted in a heavier edged album than heard from Charon previously, without losing any of their characteristic knack for killer guitar melodies and memorable vocal lines. A sterling production/mixing job by Mikko Karmila (renowned for his work with Nightwish & countless other perennial metal favourites from Finland) completes the picture. 2005.

AVG. Rating 5.0

You can classify them as Hair Metal Band, Hard Rock or even put them in 80s Heavy / Hard Rock genre! I’m up for 80s hard rock / heavy metal bands, and cinderella have paved thier road to success and also prooved themselves to be the one of the best during their era. In this DVD – The Greatest Video Hits, they have covered their hard rocking guitar riffs, power ballads and also touch of their finest bluesy notes. Some of my fav tracks “Gypsy Road”, “Dont Know What You Got (Till It’s Gone)”, “Heartbreak Station” just to name a few. Cinderella may not be a prominent figure unlike the other bands in the 80s, but for any Cinderella fan out there, this DVD has got it all. So if you want the best, you got the best!

Customer Reviews

Needs Focus – Justin Gaines – Northern Virginia
I picked up Further Lo’s self-titled debut album on a whim. I saw it in a clearance bin and decided to give it a shot, not really knowing just what to expect. These guys are all over the place on this album. One minute it’s sounding like a thrash metal album, then it shifts to a doomier sound, then it’s sounding closer to stoner rock, then over to a nu-metal/alternative rock sound. I’m reminded of Faith No More, Brand New Sin, Stone Temple Pilots, and Sevendust all at once. This all over the place, mish-mash of styles is distracting to say the least, and robs what could have otherwise been a good album of some much needed focus. It’s one thing to incorporate various styles into your overall sound, but when the styles change from one song to the next, it seems as if the band can’t decide what they want to sound like.

Call this one a 2.5 star album. The potential is there, but it’s just not working on this particular album. The poor production values don’t help much either.
